• 4 cups sugar

Aunt Sally's Cookies
Ingredients

• Bring sugar, water, and vinegar to a medium boil

• Beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy

• Add flour and salt; beat until smooth
• Divide dough in half on a lightly floured surface
• Roll each half into a 4-inch long log
• Wrap both logs in wax paper and refrigerate for at least 2 hours
• Slice logs 1/4 inch thick, and place slices on an ungreased cookie sheet

Caramel Bars - Glady Meidl
Ingredients
• 1 pkg german chocolate cake mix
• 2/3 cup evaporated milk (divided)
• 3/4 cup butter or margarine (melted)
• 1 tsp vanilla
• 1 cup nuts (chopped)
• 14 oz caramels
• 6 oz chocolate chips


Instructions
• Melt caramels in double boiler with 1/3 cup evaporated milk
• Meanwhile, mix cake mix, melted butter, remaining evaporated milk, vanilla, and nuts by hand until smooth
• Pat half of the mixture into a greased & floured 9"x19" pan
• Bake at 350 degrees F for 6 minutes
• Sprinkle chocolate chips over partially baked cake, then spread caramel over
• Crumble remaining dough on top
• Bake an additional 15-18 minutes
• Cool. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before cutting into bars

• 1 cup flour

Ingredients

• 1 1/4 cup margarine or butter (divided)
• 1/2 cup cocoa
• 3 1/2 cup powdered sugar (divided)
• 1 egg (beaten)

• 2 cups graham cracker (crushed)
• 1/3 cup creme de menthe
• 1 1/2 cups chocolate bits
Instructions
Bottom layer:
• In suace pan, combine 1/2 cup margarine or butter, and cocoa; heat & stir until blended
• Remove from heat; add 1/2 cup powdered sugar, egg, and vanilla

• Pour chocolate mixture to form the top layer
• Sprinkle remaining chocolate bits on top

• 1/2 cup shortening

• 3 Tbsp sweet cream or sour cream

• 2 Tbsp white vinegar
• 1 1/2 tsp lemon rind (grated)
• 1 tsp vanilla

Instructions

• Combine egg with vinegar, rind, and vanilla

• 2 cups sugar

Instructions
• Mix butter, sugar, eggs, dates; [use a double boiler to] boil gently until thickened
• Add vanilla, Rice Krispies; form into small balls
• Roll in chopped nuts or coconut

Date Mixture:
• 2 cups dates (cut up)

• 1 cup granulated sugar
• 1 egg slightly beaten
• 1 tsp vanilla
• 1 cup solid pack pumpkin
• 1 cup chocolate chips, assorted candies, raisins, or plain nuts (if desired, for decoration)
• Peanut butter or icing for decoration


Instructions
• Combine flour, oats, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt

• 1 tsp cinnamon
• 1 tsp baking soda
• 3 cups oatmeal
• 1 cup mix-ins (chopped nuts/raisins/chocolate/etc.)

Instructions
• Heat oven to 350 degrees F
• Beat butter and sugars until creamy
• Add eggs and vanilla; beat well
• Combine flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt; add to margarine mixture, mixing well
• Stir in oats and mix-ins; mix well
• Drop by rounded tablespoonfuls onto greased cookie sheet
• Bake at 350 degrees F for 10-12 minutes, or until light golden brown
• Cool 1 minute on cookie sheet; remove to wire rack, then cool completely

Context: These are the cookies most of us associate with the cookie jar at Maude's house. The recipe is an old Quaker Oatmeal recipe, slightly modified. Margarine was oftened used to give the cookies their gooey texture.
Old-Fashioned Molasses Cookies - Wisconsin Agriculturalist


Ingredients
• 1 cup sugar
• 1/2 cup lard
• 1/2 cup butter (softened)
• 1 cup molasses
• 3 eggs
• 1 tsp cinnamon
• 1 tsp ginger
• 1/4 tsp salt

• 4 cups sifted flour
Instructions
• Mix together sugar, lard, butter, molasses, eggs, spices, and salt

• Shape dough into balls
• Roll balls in sugar
• Bake at 375 degrees for 10 minutes
• Top each cookie with a milk chocolate kiss or star
• Press down firmly so cookie cracks around edges
• Return to oven & bake 2-5 minutes longer until golden brown


Peanut Butter Jumbos
Ingredients
• 1 1/2 cup butter or margarine (softened)
• 1 1/2 cup peanut butter
• 1 1/2 cup granulated sugar
• 1 1/2 cup brown sugar
• 3 eggs
• 3 cups flour
• 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
• 2 1/2 cups peanut M&Ms


Instructions
• Beat together butter, peanut butter, and both sugars until light & fluffy
• Blend in eggs
• Add combined flour and baking soda; mix well
• Stir in candies
• Drop dough on greased cookie sheet, about 3" apart
• Press in 2 or 3 additional candies if desired
• Bake 14-16 minutes at 350 degrees
• Cool on cookie sheet 3 minutes before removing to cooling rack

Ingredients
• 1 cup fine graham cracker crumbs
• 3 1/2 oz flaked coconut
• 6 oz semi-sweet chocolate bits
• 6 oz butterscotch bits
• 15 oz sweetened condensed milk
• 1 cup chopped nuts
• 1/2 cup melted butter
Instructions
• Pour butter into a 13"x9"x2" pan
• Sprinkle layer of crumbs over the butter, then the coconut, chocolate bits, butterscotch bits, and the nuts
• Pour the milk over all and spread evenly
• Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes

Sugar Cookies
Ingredients
• 1/2 cup butter (softened)
• 1/2 cup Crisco or Spry (shortening)
• 1 cup powdered sugar
• 1/8 tsp salt
• 1 egg
• 1/2 tsp [baking] soda
• 1/2 tsp cream of tartar
• 1/2 tsp vanilla
• 2 1/2 cups flour
Instructions
• Cream butter, shortening, sugar, salt, egg, [baking] soda, and cream of tartar together
• Add flour & vanilla
• These may be made in press or rolled out and cut for Christmas cookies
• Bake 350 degrees F for 10-15 minutes
• Watch carefully - burns easily

Sugar Cookies - Irene
Ingredients
• 1 cup butter (softened)
• 1 cup oil or shortening
• 1 cup sugar
• 1 cup powdered sugar
• 1 tsp salt
• 1 tsp [baking] soda
• 1 tsp cream of tartar
• 1 tsp vanilla
• 2 eggs
• 4 cups flour


Instructions
• Cream shortening, butter, & sugars
• Add eggs one at a time
• Add remaining ingredients
• Chill 1 hour
• Roll in small ball & flatten or drop by teaspoon
• Bake 8 to 10 minutes in 350 degree F oven
• Frost with melted white chocolate & decorate
• Can frost while warm
Wreath Cookies - Nona Spanbauer


Ingredients
• 30 marshmallows
• 1/4 cup butter
• 1 tsp green coloring
• 1 tsp vanilla
• 3 1/2 cups corn flakes (I crack mine slightly)
• Red cinnamon hearts or balls (for decoration)
• Silver petites (for decoration)
Instructions
• Melt marshmallows in double boiler, then add 1/4 cup butter
• Pour 1 tsp of green coloring and 1 tsp vanilla over the marshmallow/butter mixture
• "Dear Mary - There weren't any written instructions with this recipe. I just had to experiment. I take a small amount of dough then start making a hole in the center, forming the wreath. If the little red hearts don't want to stick, melt a couple marshmallows, and using a toothpick put a little on the back of them. This seems to do the trick. The little silver things stick pretty good. Hope you can make some sense out of this. Good luck!"
